The wicking grade, and the one that solves a problem the others cannot. At 20–55 mPa·s it is thin enough to travel into an already-assembled thread by capillary action — so a fastener that has been found loose can be locked in place without stripping the assembly down. The same penetration lets it seal porosity in welds, castings and powdered metal parts.
Key features
- Wicks into pre-assembled fasteners — no disassembly needed
- Very low viscosity: 20–55 mPa·s
- Medium to high strength — 30 N·m breakloose on M10
- Also seals porosity in welds, castings and powdered metal
- Tested to the lot requirements of Mil-S-46163A (a regional approval)
- Removable with standard hand tools in most cases
Typical applications
- Pre-assembled fasteners
- Sealing porous welds

How to use it
- For an already-assembled fastener: clean the threads, then apply several drops at the screw and body junction and let capillary action draw it in.
- For blind holes: apply several drops down the internal threads to the bottom of the hole.
- For porosity sealing: clean the area, heat it locally to about 121°C, let it cool to about 85°C, then apply.
- Do not let the bottle tip touch the metal surface.
- Remove with standard hand tools; where engagement is excessive, heat locally to about 250°C.
Handling and storage
- Not recommended for pure oxygen or oxygen-rich systems.
- Not a sealant for chlorine or other strong oxidising materials.
- Not normally recommended on plastics — thermoplastics can stress-crack.
- On passive metals (stainless, aluminium, plated) or below 5°C, use Loctite SF 7471 or SF 7649 activator to bring the cure speed up.
- Store unopened and dry. Henkel gives optimal storage as 8°C to 21°C; outside 8–28°C the product properties can be affected.
- Do not return decanted product to the original container.
When to reach for 290
290 is the only grade here that works on a joint you have already built. If a fastener is found loose on inspection and stripping the assembly is expensive, 290 wicks in and locks it. For new assembly work, choose by strength instead — 222 low, 243 medium, 270 or 263 high.
