A steel-reinforced two-part epoxy putty that cures to a metal-like finish — it can be machined, drilled, tapped or filed once hard. It will not sag or shrink, so it holds shape on a vertical face while it cures. At 61.7 N/mm² compressive strength it rebuilds worn parts without welding or hot work, which is what makes it useful where a naked flame is not allowed.

How to use it
- Remove dirt, oil and grease with a suitable cleaner — Henkel names Loctite SF 7840.
- Grit blast all surfaces to a profile depth of 75–100 microns and a cleanliness of Near White Metal (SIS SA 2½ / SSPC-SP 10).
- After blasting, clean with a waterless cleaner and coat before any oxidation occurs.
- Metal that has been in seawater should be grit blasted, high-pressure water blasted, then left 24 hours for salts to sweat to the surface. Test for chloride and repeat until below 40 ppm.
- Mix vigorously to a uniform colour. Force a thin layer deep into the surface texture first, then build up to the finished thickness immediately.
- Inspect for pinholes and misses just after application and again once cured.
- Clean tools with a Loctite solvent-based cleaner immediately; once cured it comes off only mechanically.
Handling and storage
- Relative humidity below 85%; ambient temperature above 15°C and rising.
- Substrate temperature must be at least 3°C above the dew point, or moisture condenses on the part.
- Working time and cure depend on temperature and mass — the larger the mixed quantity, the faster it goes off.
- To speed cure in the cold: store the epoxy at room temperature and pre-heat the repair surface until warm to the touch.
- To slow cure in the heat: mix in small masses and cool the components first.
- Store unopened and dry, ideally 8°C to 21°C; outside 8–28°C the properties can be affected.
EA 3471 or the Devcon putties?
EA 3471 and Devcon Plastic Steel Putty (A) do the same job — steel-filled, machinable, no hot work — and are close on compressive strength (61.7 against 57 N/mm²). We stock both, so the choice usually comes down to what your yard or client already specifies. Where a joint is smaller than a putty can reach, a retaining compound such as Loctite 660 covers gaps to 0.5 mm; beyond that, the epoxies take over. For a fast field patch rather than a machined rebuild, use EA 3463, which cures in ten minutes and works underwater.
