The fast-set steel putty — hardens in ten minutes and does not sag, so it can be worked overhead or on a vertical face without slumping. Gel time is 3.5–4 minutes, so mix only what you can place. It bonds to steel, cast iron, stainless, concrete, copper, aluminium and cleanly abraded bronze, which makes it a genuinely general-purpose breakdown repair.

How to use it
- Remove dirt, oil and grease with a suitable cleaner — Henkel names Loctite SF 7840.
- Grit blast all surfaces to a profile depth of 75–100 microns and a cleanliness of Near White Metal (SIS SA 2½ / SSPC-SP 10).
- After blasting, clean with a waterless cleaner and coat before any oxidation occurs.
- Metal that has been in seawater should be grit blasted, high-pressure water blasted, then left 24 hours for salts to sweat to the surface. Test for chloride and repeat until below 40 ppm.
- Mix vigorously to a uniform colour, then force a thin layer deep into the surface texture and build up to the finished thickness immediately.
- Rebuilding a shaft: machine the worn area down 3 mm to a square shoulder — the material is stronger against a square edge than a feathered one.
- Machine a spiral cut in the base of the repair to key it mechanically.
- Apply excess so shrinkage on cure does not leave a depression, and machine back to original dimensions before full cure, as the cured material is very wear resistant.
- Clean tools immediately with Loctite 7070, acetone or isopropyl alcohol; once cured it comes off only mechanically.
Handling and storage
- Relative humidity below 85%; ambient temperature above 15°C and rising.
- Substrate temperature must be at least 3°C above the dew point, or moisture condenses on the part.
- Working time and cure depend on temperature and mass — the larger the mixed quantity, the faster it goes off.
- To speed cure in the cold: store the epoxy at room temperature and pre-heat the repair surface until warm to the touch.
- To slow cure in the heat: mix in small masses and cool the components first.
- Store unopened and dry, ideally 8°C to 21°C; outside 8–28°C the properties can be affected.
EA 3473 or EA 3463?
Both are fast steel-filled repairs. EA 3463 is the hand-kneaded stick — cures in ten minutes, works under water, and needs no mixing equipment, which makes it the emergency choice. EA 3473 also hardens in ten minutes but is a mixed two-part paste with better numbers (51 against 50 N/mm² compressive, 27 against 18 tensile, and 15 against 3.8 N/mm² lap shear) and it is non-sagging for overhead work. Note its glass transition is only 24°C, so for anything running warm choose EA 3471 or EA 3478 instead.
