Check stockWhat Loctite EA 3474 is for
The only grade in this family that addresses sliding wear. It is mineral filled, and the cured surface is self-lubricating — so where two parts rub, it reduces friction rather than simply filling the gap. That makes it the choice for shafts, bearing housings, sleeves, keyways and flanges that keep moving after the repair, and it takes gaps to 1.0 mm.
Key features
- Self-lubricating cured surface — reduces sliding wear on moving parts
- Mineral filled; high wear resistance
- Maximum gap 1.0 mm
- 1:1 mix by weight and by volume — no weighing
- 70 N/mm² compressive strength, 45 N/mm² tensile, 85 Shore D
- Does not rust
- Only 0.1% linear shrinkage
- Operating range −20°C to +120°C
Typical applications
- Abrasion protection
- Chutes and pumps
Technical data
Uncured material
| Technology | Epoxy — mineral filled |

Open time and cure
Full cure within 72 hours. Larger mixed quantities generate heat and cure faster.
| Temperature | Open time | Functional strength |
|---|
| 10°C | 180 minutes | 24 hours |
| 20°C | 60 minutes | 12 hours |
| 30°C | 40 minutes | faster than 12 hours |
Cured properties
Cured 7 days at 22°C.
| Compressive strength (ISO 604) | 70 N/mm² (10,000 psi) |
| Tensile strength (ISO 527-2) | 45 N/mm² (6,500 psi) |
| Tensile modulus (ISO 527) | 10,000 N/mm² |
| Lap shear on steel (ISO 4587) | 20 N/mm² (2,900 psi) |
| Lap shear on aluminium (ISO 4587) | 12 N/mm² (1,700 psi) |
| Shore hardness (ISO 868, Durometer D) | 85 |
| Linear shrinkage (ASTM D792) | 0.1% |
Solvent and chemical resistance
Fully cured material only — incomplete cure or poor mixing will reduce resistance.
| Liquid or solvent | Performance |
|---|
| Water, dilute acids, salt solution | Excellent — some surface discolouration may occur |
| 10% caustic soda | Excellent |
| Petrol, hydrocarbon fuels and lubricants | Excellent |
| Chlorinated solvents | Good, but not for continuous long-term contact |
| Methanol, acetone, MEK | Poor |
How to use it
- Surfaces should be clean, dry and free of grease. For high-strength structural bonds, additional surface treatment increases strength and durability.
- Stir each component separately, then measure out equal amounts of each.
- Stir together thoroughly for about two minutes until the mix is homogeneous.
- Apply with the spatula provided.
- For larger breaks or cracks, apply over glass fibre matting as a patch or bandage.
- As a moulding compound, use a wax, grease or silicone release agent.
- Excess uncured adhesive wipes away with an organic solvent such as acetone.
- Keep the parts still during cure and let full strength develop before loading the joint.
- Clean tools with hot soapy water before the adhesive hardens.
Handling and storage
- Relative humidity below 85%; ambient temperature above 15°C and rising.
- Substrate temperature must be at least 3°C above the dew point, or moisture condenses on the part.
- Working time and cure depend on temperature and mass — the larger the mixed quantity, the faster it goes off.
- To speed cure in the cold: store the epoxy at room temperature and pre-heat the repair surface until warm to the touch.
- To slow cure in the heat: mix in small masses and cool the components first.
- Store unopened and dry, ideally 8°C to 21°C; outside 8–28°C the properties can be affected.
EA 3474 or EA 3475?
These two are near twins — same 1:1 mix, same 1.0 mm gap, same 70 N/mm² compressive, same 0.1% shrinkage, both non-rusting. The difference is the filler and what it does. EA 3474 is mineral filled and self-lubricating, for surfaces that continue to slide against each other after the repair. EA 3475 is aluminium filled and slightly stronger in tension (50 against 45 N/mm²) for static rebuilds. Moving contact → 3474. Fixed repair → 3475. For the hardest wear of all, EA 3478 at 134 N/mm². Compare also Devcon Wear Resistant Putty (WR-2), which we stock alongside.
