The aluminium-filled repair epoxy — and the one that does not rust, which matters on a repair that will sit in salt air. It handles the largest gap in this family at 1.0 mm, mixes 1:1 so there is nothing to weigh, and shrinks only 0.1% linear, so a rebuilt shaft or keyway holds its dimension. Compressive shear reaches 70 N/mm².
Key features
- Aluminium filled — does not rust
- Maximum gap 1.0 mm, the largest in this family
- 1:1 mix by weight and by volume — no weighing
- Only 0.1% linear shrinkage
- 70 N/mm² compressive shear; 50 N/mm² tensile; 85 Shore D
- Excellent resistance to water, dilute acids, salt solution and caustic soda
- Can be applied over glass fibre matting as a patch or bandage
- Operating range −20°C to +120°C
Typical applications
- Aluminium castings
- Non-ferrous parts
Technical data
Uncured material
| Technology | Epoxy — aluminium filled |
| Appearance (uncured) | Grey putty |
| Components | Two part — resin and hardener |
| Mix ratio by weight | 1 : 1 |
| Mix ratio by volume | 1 : 1 |
| Cure | Room temperature after mixing |
| Maximum gap | 1.0 mm |
| Operating range | −20°C to +120°C |
Open time and cure
Full cure within 72 hours. Larger mixed quantities generate heat and cure faster.
| Temperature | Open time | Functional strength |
|---|
| 10°C | 180 minutes | 24 hours |
| 20°C | 60 minutes | 12 hours |
| 30°C | 40 minutes | faster than 12 hours |
Cured properties
Cured 7 days at 22°C.
| Compressive shear strength (ISO 10123) | 70 N/mm² (10,000 psi) |
| Tensile strength (ISO 527-2) | 50 N/mm² (7,300 psi) |
| Tensile modulus (ISO 527) | 7,000 N/mm² |
| Lap shear on steel (ISO 4587) | 20 N/mm² (2,900 psi) |
| Lap shear on aluminium (ISO 4587) | 15 N/mm² (2,200 psi) |
| Shore hardness (ISO 868, Durometer D) | 85 |
| Linear shrinkage (ASTM D792) | 0.1% |
Solvent and chemical resistance
Fully cured material only — incomplete cure or poor mixing will reduce resistance.
| Liquid or solvent | Performance |
|---|
| Water, dilute acids, salt solution | Excellent — some surface discolouration may occur |
| 10% caustic soda | Excellent |
| Petrol, hydrocarbon fuels and lubricants | Excellent |
| Chlorinated solvents | Good, but not for continuous long-term contact |
| Methanol, acetone, MEK | Poor |
How to use it
- Surfaces should be clean, dry and free of grease. For high-strength structural bonds, additional surface treatment increases strength and durability.
- Stir each component separately, then measure out equal amounts of each.
- Stir together thoroughly for up to two minutes until the colour is even.
- Apply with the spatula provided.
- For larger breaks or fractures, apply over glass fibre matting as a patch or bandage.
- As a moulding compound, use a wax, grease or silicone release agent.
- Excess uncured adhesive wipes away with an organic solvent such as acetone.
- Keep the parts still during cure and let full strength develop before loading the joint.
- Clean tools with hot soapy water before the adhesive hardens.
Handling and storage
- Relative humidity below 85%; ambient temperature above 15°C and rising.
- Substrate temperature must be at least 3°C above the dew point, or moisture condenses on the part.
- Working time and cure depend on temperature and mass — the larger the mixed quantity, the faster it goes off.
- To speed cure in the cold: store the epoxy at room temperature and pre-heat the repair surface until warm to the touch.
- To slow cure in the heat: mix in small masses and cool the components first.
- Store unopened and dry, ideally 8°C to 21°C; outside 8–28°C the properties can be affected.
EA 3475 or EA 3471?
Both rebuild worn machinery without hot work. EA 3475 is aluminium filled, so the repair does not rust — the better choice in salt air or wet service — and it bridges gaps to 1.0 mm with a simple 1:1 mix. EA 3471 is steel filled, harder to prepare (grit blast to Near White Metal) but machines to a true metal finish at 61.7 N/mm² compressive. Non-rusting and easy to mix → 3475. Machined back to size → 3471 or, for the most demanding wear, EA 3478.
