The other methyl cyanoacrylate, and the metal-bonding grade with the best heat behaviour in this family: its glass transition is 165°C, against 100°C for the toughened 480. It matches 415 for strength at 20–30 N/mm² on steel but is far thinner at 70–120 mPa·s, so it wicks into close-fitting metal parts and fixtures faster.
Key features
- Methyl cyanoacrylate, formulated for metals
- 20–30 N/mm² lap shear on grit-blasted steel
- Glass transition 165°C — the highest of any cyanoacrylate here
- Low viscosity at 70–120 mPa·s — wicks into close joints
- ≥5.0 N/mm² on steel after just two minutes
- Qualified to Commercial Item Description A-A-3097 (a regional approval)
- Full strength retained in motor oil at 40°C to 1,000 hours
- Holds 100% of strength on polycarbonate at 95% RH
Typical applications
- Metal assemblies
- Fast fixturing

How to use it
- Bond surfaces should be clean and free from grease for best performance.
- This product performs best in a thin bond gap of about 0.05 mm.
- Apply to one surface only and assemble promptly — the parts must be located accurately, as there is little opportunity to adjust.
- Hold or clamp until fixtured.
- Excess adhesive dissolves with Loctite cleanup solvent, nitromethane or acetone.
- Allow full strength to develop before applying service loads.
Handling and storage
- Not recommended for pure oxygen or oxygen-rich systems.
- Not a sealant for chlorine or other strong oxidising materials.
- Store at 2°C to 8°C — cyanoacrylates want refrigeration, unlike the anaerobics which prefer 8–21°C. Outside that range the product properties can be affected.
- Full functional strength comes quickly, but chemical and solvent resistance keeps developing for at least 24 hours.
- Do not return decanted product to the original container.
The full instant adhesive range
Choose by substrate first, then consistency. Metals: 496 (thin, close fits) or 415 (thick, looser joints) — both 20–30 N/mm² on steel. Plastics and rubbers: 406. General purpose across everything including wood, leather and fabric: 401. Mixed work from one bottle: 495. Vertical or overhead: the 454 gel. Shock, peel or vibration: 480, the only toughened grade — every other cyanoacrylate here has a T-peel strength under 0.5 N/mm.
