What Loctite 510 is for

The high-temperature anaerobic gasket. Where 573 and 574 are characterised to 150°C, 510 runs to 200°C — and its heat-ageing data is unusual: strength rises well above its starting value over thousands of hours at 150°C. It is the grade for rigid flange faces on transmissions and motor casings that run hot.

Key features

  • High temperature — service range −10°C to 200°C
  • Strength increases on heat ageing rather than falling away
  • ≥7.5 N/mm² compressive shear after 24 hours
  • Reaches ≥1 N/mm² in the first hour
  • NSF registered Category P1 for food processing areas (a regional approval)
  • Australian Gas Association certificate 2590 Class II, 500 kPa, −10 to 200°C
  • Gains strength in water/glycol — 160% at 100 hours
  • Cold strength tested to −75°C

Typical applications

  • Engine flanges
  • High temperature joints

How to use it

  • Flange faces must be clean and free from grease.
  • Designed for close-fitting flanged parts with gaps up to 0.25 mm.
  • Apply as a continuous bead, a rolled film, or by screen printing to one flange face.
  • For gaps over 0.125 mm using a pen roller, apply a rolled film to both faces.
  • Low pressure may be applied to confirm the seal immediately after assembly, before curing.
  • Tighten the flanges as soon as possible after assembly to avoid shimming.

Handling and storage

  • Not recommended for pure oxygen or oxygen-rich systems.
  • Not a sealant for chlorine or other strong oxidising materials.
  • Not normally recommended on plastics — thermoplastics can stress-crack.
  • Check compatibility if aqueous washing systems are used before bonding; some washes affect the cure.
  • Store unopened and dry, ideally 8°C to 21°C; outside 8–28°C the properties can be affected.
  • Do not return decanted product to the original container.
  • Cured product softens with a Loctite solvent such as 7200 and can then be scraped off; finish with a cloth and Loctite SF 7063.

Loctite 510 or 574?

Both are anaerobic form-in-place gaskets for rigid metal flanges with gaps to 0.25 mm. The deciding factor is temperature: 510 is rated to 200°C and gains strength on heat ageing, while 573, 574 and 518 are characterised to 150°C. If the flange runs hot — transmission casing, motor housing, exhaust-side pump — specify 510. If it does not, 574 cures faster. For flanges that flex, or gaps beyond what an anaerobic can bridge, use the silicone SI 5927.
