A low-strength, high-viscosity paste for locking and sealing metal pipes and fittings. The headline figure is pressure: Henkel tested it to 207 bar (3,000 psi) on 3/8in NPT steel tees and plugs. Low strength means the fitting still comes apart with hand tools, and its approvals cover potable water, natural gas, petrol and petroleum oils.
Key features
- Pressure tested to 207 bar (3,000 psi) per ASTM D1599
- Low strength — hand-tool removable
- Certified to ANSI/NSF Standard 61 for potable water to 82°C (a regional approval)
- UL classified (MH8007) for petrol, petroleum oils, natural gas and butane to 2 in. pipe
- ULC classified (MH27131) to 13,790 kPa for natural gas, methane, propane and butane
- Ignition temperature 465°C; no flash point in the liquid state
- Gains strength in DEF (AdBlue®) and bio-diesel after 1,000 hours
Typical applications
- Pneumatic fittings
- Instrumentation

How to use it
- Clean all surfaces, external and internal, with a Loctite cleaning solvent and allow to dry.
- On inactive metals, or if the cure is too slow, spray with Loctite SF 7471 or SF 7649 activator and allow to dry.
- Apply a 360° bead to the leading threads of the male fitting, leaving the first thread free.
- Force the material into the thread roots to fill the voids. On larger threads, apply a 360° bead to the female threads as well.
- Assemble and wrench-tighten in line with the fitting manufacturer's recommendations.
- A properly tightened fitting seals instantly to moderate pressure; allow 24 hours for maximum pressure and solvent resistance.
Handling and storage
- Not recommended for pure oxygen or oxygen-rich systems.
- Not a sealant for chlorine or other strong oxidising materials.
- Not normally recommended on plastics — thermoplastics can stress-crack.
- Disassembly is with standard hand tools; over 1 in. diameter or long engagement may need localised heat to about 250°C.
- Store unopened and dry, ideally 8°C to 21°C; outside 8–28°C the properties can be affected.
- Do not return decanted product to the original container.
Loctite 565, 567 or 577?
All three seal metal pipe threads and all three come apart with hand tools at normal sizes. 565 is the low-strength paste with the highest published pressure figure and the widest gas and water approvals. 567 adds high lubricity to stop galling on stainless. 577 is medium strength with 0.25 mm gap capability for worn or loose threads. For fine hydraulic threads, use 542 instead.
